The short version
- No account, no sign-in and no ads.
- No analytics, tracking or third-party code in the app.
- The app has no server of its own. Your progress and settings stay on your iPhone or iPad.
- The one exception: if you use Game Checkup with a Chess.com username, the app asks Chess.com for your public games.
- Apple handles purchases. We never see your payment details.
- We don’t sell or share personal information, and we don’t use it for advertising.
Who we are
London System Chess, the app and this website, is made by Bohdan Ivanchenko. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean Bohdan Ivanchenko, who is responsible for any personal data described here. You can reach us at support@londonsystemchess.com.
What stays on your device
The app stores these on your iPhone or iPad, and nowhere else:
- Your progress: the lessons you’ve finished, the positions you’ve learned and when each is due for review, your answers and how long they took, XP, streaks, daily activity and badges.
- Your settings: board theme, daily goal, reminder time, sounds and the like.
- The first name you give Bertie, if you give one. It’s optional, and you can change or clear it in the app under Settings › Profile.
- Your Chess.com username, if you use Game Checkup (see the next section).
None of this is sent to us, and the app doesn’t sync it through iCloud or any other service. If you back up your device, the backup includes the app’s data, as it does for any app.
Game Checkup and Chess.com
Game Checkup can look up your games on Chess.com. It does this only when you enter a username and tap Check my games. Your device then contacts Chess.com’s public API (api.chess.com) directly: the username is part of the web address, and the app downloads your public games from your most recent months of play. As with any web request, Chess.com also receives your device’s IP address. Chess.com handles the request under its own privacy policy.
The games are checked on your device and aren’t saved. The app keeps only the username, on your device, so it’s filled in next time. It stays until you check a different username or delete the app.
If you paste or import a PGN instead, the games are checked on your device and nothing is sent anywhere. The app reads your clipboard only when you tap Paste.
Purchases
The Season Ticket is sold through Apple’s App Store, and Apple handles the payment. We never see your name, email address or payment details. The app asks Apple whether you have an active Season Ticket so that it can unlock the course, and Apple sends us sales reports that don’t identify you. Apple’s privacy policy covers what Apple does with your purchase.
Reminders, widgets and sharing
- Reminders. Reminders are off until you turn them on. The app asks for permission to send notifications only then, and schedules them on your device. We don’t send push notifications.
- Widgets. Widgets show a summary, such as your streak and the positions due, which the app passes to them on your device. They never show your name or username.
- Share cards. When you share a lesson card, you choose where it goes. The card shows the final position, the lesson, your grade and your streak, not your name. If you choose Save Image, iOS may ask your permission to add it to Photos. The app can add pictures to your library but can’t see what’s in it.
Crash reports from Apple
If you’ve chosen to share analytics with app developers (in the Settings app, under Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements), Apple may send us crash reports and usage statistics in a form that doesn’t identify you. We use them only to find and fix problems.
This website
londonsystemchess.com sets no cookies, runs no analytics or advertising, and loads nothing from other companies: even the fonts are served from here. The site is hosted by Vercel Inc. Like any web server, Vercel’s servers see your IP address and browser details when you visit, and may log them to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. Vercel may process this data outside the UK and EU, under its privacy notice.
Emails to support
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. If you write from the app, the email also includes the app version, your type of device and its iOS version, which you can see and remove before sending. We use all this only to answer you and to fix what you report, which is our legitimate interest in running the app. We keep emails while they’re useful for support, and we’ll delete yours if you ask.
Your email reaches us through Resend, Inc., which receives mail for londonsystemchess.com and passes it on to our Gmail inbox. Resend and Google may process it outside the UK and EU, under their privacy notices: Resend’s and Google’s.
Deleting your data
- Your progress: in the app, go to Settings › Reset all progress. This removes your lessons, learned positions, XP, streaks and badges, and keeps your settings, name and purchases.
- Your name: Settings › Profile.
- Everything, including your Chess.com username: delete the app. Nothing is left with us, because we never had it.
- Emails you’ve sent us: write to support@londonsystemchess.com.
Purchases belong to your Apple Account. If you reinstall the app, Restore purchases brings the Season Ticket back.
Children
The app is for chess players of all ages. It collects no personal data from anyone, children included, and it has no ads, chat or social features.
Your rights
If you’re in the UK, the EU or anywhere with similar laws, you have rights over your personal data, including the right to see it, correct it and have it deleted. The app keeps your data on your device, where you control it, so in practice a request to us can only concern emails you’ve sent. Write to support@londonsystemchess.com and we’ll reply within one month.
You can also complain to your data protection authority. In the UK that’s the Information Commissioner’s Office.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If a change matters, for example because more data would leave your device, we’ll also mention it in the app’s release notes.
